Short Stay: Sophie Anna Veelenturf

Short Stay: Sophie Anna Veelenturf

Sophie Anna Veelenturf (she/her, 1999) is from Amsterdam and moved to Ghent in 2019 to study Drama at KASK.

Besides her work in theatre, Sophie Anna is an avid singer, which she does, among other things, as one of the actors in Funeral by Ontroerend Goed. She graduated in summer 2024 as a theatre maker and performer from the master’s programme in Drama with the documentary-theatre performance-meets-standup ‘Linkse Gaatjes’. As part of the same course at KASK, in 2022 she created the performance TERATO- with Emma Van Ammel and Ellen De Mul, a puppet show about the relationship between a woman and the monsters in her dreams, stemming from her fascination with the monstrous in people.

From September 2023 to date, Sophie Anna has been working on a documentary research project on political-sexual themes called ‘Linkse Gaatjes’. In search of an answer to the question whether love is actually possible between political opposites, she interviewed 16 people in the Netherlands and Belgium last year: right-conservative men and women, couples and exes of left-right combinations, a sexologist, journalist and gender and culture professor. The common thread is her own dating experiences and desires, along with a specific focus on the narrative ‘right-wing talk fills left-wing holes’. She will continue this artistic documentary research in the coming year.
