Short Stay: Willem Herbots & Jonathan Michiels

Short Stay: Willem Herbots & Jonathan Michiels

Short Stay is an initiative where Resonanten can offer makers a short residency so they can get to know the workings of detheatermaker.

Meet Jonathan and Willem who were part of the forest residency at Het Bos in Antwerp in January.

Willem Herbots (he/him 1999) studied Drama at LUCA School of Arts. He made his theater debut at fABULEUS in the performances LOVE SONGS (Veldeke) and Merlijn of het barre land. Later he played in Arne Sierens’ Politie + Dieven. Next summer he will make the performance Don Quichot with Dries De Win at Theater FroeFroe. On screen, he has appeared in series such as wtFOCK, Het Verhaal van Vlaanderen and 2DEZIT and films such as Ritueel and Het Geheugenspel.

Jonathan Michiels (he/him 1996) also studied Drama at LUCA School of Arts. He has already appeared on stage in Tristano by Ensembletheater Antwerpen, Blik by the Nieuwstedelijk, Mijn Slappe Komedie by tgTG, I went to Troy and all I got was another Greek tragedy by Pleun Van Engelen, So You Think You Can by Montignards#5 and his own master’s thesis Komedie der Verleiding, which he made with Dagmar Dierick. On TV, he has appeared in wtFOCK, De Club and Hawa & Adam, among others.
Willem and Jonathan are working on preliminary research for a new youth performance, starting from the question of what “being human” can mean in a time when technology seems to be catching up with us, even on fronts we always thought of as typically human: creativity, empathy and connection.
In the course of the past year, they wrote a first working text from improvisation. During the Forest Residence, they took that text to the floor again for the first time in a theatrical setting.
On the other hand, they experimented with puppetry. They investigated in what way the puppet as a “made man” fits into their performance.
